Morocco has two main Saharan destinations that travelers debate endlessly: Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) in the southeast, and Zagora (with access to Erg Chegaga) in the south. Both are genuine desert experiences — but they are quite different in character, size, accessibility, and the quality of the experience they offer. As a tour company that has operated in both areas for 12+ years, here is our honest, experience-based comparison.
The Quick Answer
For first-time visitors: Choose Merzouga (Erg Chebbi). It has the highest dunes, the best-established luxury camps, the most dramatic camel trek routes, and is easily accessible on established tour routes from Marrakech and Fes. If you have limited time and want the definitive Moroccan desert experience, Erg Chebbi is the answer. Zagora is a great choice for experienced travelers seeking a more remote, less-touristed experience or for those specifically coming from Marrakech and wanting to add the Drâa Valley.
Merzouga — Erg Chebbi
Location: Southeastern Morocco, near the Algerian border, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region.
Dune Height: Up to 150–160 meters — some of the highest dunes in Morocco and among the most dramatic in all of North Africa.
Sand Quality: Fine, golden-ochre sand that piles into spectacular, photogenic dune formations. The color is particularly vivid at sunrise and sunset — a deep amber-orange that photographs dramatically.
Driving Distance: About 560 km from Marrakech (7–8 hours), 430 km from Fes (5–6 hours). These distances are what make Erg Chebbi the centerpiece of our multi-day tours rather than a day trip.
Camp Quality: Erg Chebbi has a very well-developed camp infrastructure, ranging from budget shared camps to genuine luxury glamping setups with private tents, proper beds, en-suite facilities in some cases, and excellent food. The competition between camps has driven quality up significantly in recent years.
Tourism Level: Erg Chebbi is the more visited of the two — in peak season (October–April), the dune area sees hundreds of visitors. However, the dunes are large enough that you can easily find solitude if you walk even 15 minutes from the main camp areas. The sunrise experience on the dunes is intimate and quiet even in peak season.
Zagora — Erg Chegaga (& Erg Lihoudi)
Location: Southern Morocco, on the Drâa Valley, south of Ouarzazate.
Dune Height: Erg Lihoudi (the accessible erg near Zagora) has modest dunes — impressive but not on the scale of Erg Chebbi. Erg Chegaga, about 2 hours further south by 4x4, has much larger dunes (reaching 100m+) but requires a dedicated expedition.
Driving Distance: About 370 km from Marrakech (4.5–5 hours via Ouarzazate). Closer to Marrakech than Merzouga, which makes it more accessible for shorter trips.
Camp Quality: Camp infrastructure around Zagora is improving but generally less developed than Erg Chebbi. For the best experience, Erg Chegaga requires a more serious desert expedition (usually 2–3 days by 4x4 from Zagora). The payoff is genuine remoteness and a more raw, unspoiled desert experience.
Unique Feature: The Zagora area includes the extraordinary Drâa Valley — Morocco's longest river valley, lined with ancient kasbahs, lush date palm oases, and historic ksour that few tourists visit. If you want to add this landscape to your desert experience, Zagora is the better choice.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Factor | Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | Zagora (Erg Lihoudi) |
|---|---|---|
| Dune Size | 150m+ (spectacular) | 30–50m (pleasant) |
| Distance from Marrakech | 560 km (8 hrs) | 370 km (5 hrs) |
| Distance from Fes | 430 km (6 hrs) | 700 km+ (9 hrs) |
| Camp Quality | Excellent (luxury options) | Good (improving) |
| Photography | World-class dune forms | Beautiful, gentler |
| Drâa Valley access | Via detour (Day 3) | Route goes through it |
| Remoteness / Solitude | Good (large dune area) | More remote |
| Best for first-timers | YES | For experienced travelers |
Our Verdict
For first-time Morocco visitors, especially those on a 3–5 day desert tour, Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is the clear winner. The sheer scale of the dunes — some over 150 meters high — creates an experience of genuine awe that the smaller ergs near Zagora simply cannot match. The camel trek routes at Erg Chebbi are better developed, the camps are more comfortable, and the logistics are easier for a tour group. The dune sunset and sunrise photography is world-class.
Zagora is the better choice for travelers who want to combine a desert experience with the extraordinary Drâa Valley — Morocco's most dramatic pre-Saharan landscape — and who are looking for a somewhat more off-the-beaten-track experience. It is also better for those who only have 2–3 days and are based in Marrakech, since the drive is significantly shorter. For the ultimate remote desert experience, Erg Chegaga (the large sand sea accessible from Zagora by 4x4 expedition) is one of the most spectacular and untouched places in all of North Africa — but it requires planning and the right vehicle.
