Tour Overview

The 8-Day Grand Morocco Desert & Culture Tour is the most comprehensive way to experience the soul of Morocco in a single, unforgettable journey. This is not a rushed tour — eight days allows you to breathe deeply, stay longer in the places that move you, and truly connect with the landscapes, culture, and people of this extraordinary country. Beginning in vibrant Marrakech and ending in ancient Fes (or vice versa), the tour covers the full arc of Morocco's greatest experiences.

You will drive over the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass and stop at the extraordinary UNESCO kasbah of Aït Benhaddou. You will wander through Ouarzazate, explore the enchanting Drâa Valley with its ancient ksour and lush palmeries, and wind through the spectacular Dades Gorge. At Merzouga, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise to over 150 meters and the desert stretches to the Algerian horizon — here you ride camels at sunset, sleep in a Berber desert camp, and wake before dawn to watch the sunrise from the dune summit. From the Sahara, the tour continues via the Todra Gorge, the Ziz Valley, and the Tafilalet oasis to the extraordinary ancient city of Fes — where an entire day is devoted to exploring the world's largest car-free urban area and one of the greatest medieval Islamic cities ever built.

Every day of this tour brings a new landscape, a new cultural layer, a new reason to fall deeper in love with Morocco. The pace is comfortable, the accommodations are carefully chosen, and your guide is with you every step of the way.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day1

Marrakech — The Red City Orientation

Your tour begins in Marrakech, one of the world's great cities and Morocco's cultural capital. After meeting your guide in the morning, spend this first day absorbing the extraordinary energy of this ancient medina city. Visit the Jemaa el-Fna — the vast, UNESCO-recognized main square that transforms throughout the day from a market space to a spectacular performance arena as snake charmers, acrobats, henna artists, and storytellers fill the space at dusk. With your guide, explore the historic souks of the medina, where separate quarters are devoted to leather goods, spices, lanterns, textiles, and silver jewelry. Visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa, a stunning 14th-century Quranic school whose intricate zellij tilework and carved stucco represent Morocco's greatest architectural tradition. Take time in the beautiful Bahia Palace, built in the 19th century for a Grand Vizier's vast harem, with its cool tiled courtyards and ornate painted ceilings. In the afternoon, visit the Jardin Majorelle, the iconic cobalt-blue garden created by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later owned by Yves Saint Laurent — perhaps the most photographed garden in North Africa. As evening falls, join the extraordinary theater of Jemaa el-Fna for dinner among the food stalls. Overnight: Riad in Marrakech medina.

Day2

Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate

Early departure from Marrakech (07:30 AM) as your driver-guide heads southeast into the magnificent High Atlas Mountains. The drive ascends steadily through Berber villages perched on rocky hillsides, with panoramic views expanding as you climb toward the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) — the highest paved road pass in North Africa and one of the most scenic drives in the entire Maghreb region. Snow-capped peaks frame the horizon in winter; wildflowers carpet the mountain meadows in spring; hawks circle on thermals above bare rock in summer. From the summit, the landscape shifts dramatically as you descend into the lunar pre-Saharan south, following the Ounila River valley to the extraordinary Aït Benhaddou ksar. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the finest examples of earthen architecture in the world — a towering multi-storey complex of pisé towers and decorated facades rising from a rocky outcrop above a palmery, reflected in the seasonal river below. Your guide leads you through the inhabited ksar, explaining its history from ancient Berber trading post to Hollywood film location (Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and dozens more were filmed here). After lunch at a restaurant in Aït Benhaddou, continue to Ouarzazate — Morocco's desert capital and film city — for the night. Overnight: Riad in Ouarzazate.

Day3

Ouarzazate → Drâa Valley → Agdz → Zagora

Today you explore a part of Morocco that few tourists see: the extraordinary Drâa Valley, Morocco's longest river valley and one of the most dramatic pre-Saharan landscapes in North Africa. Departing Ouarzazate after breakfast, you head south through the Tizi n'Tinifift pass, descending into the vast Drâa Valley where a ribbon of intense green — date palms, olive trees, and irrigated gardens — winds through a landscape of red rock, black volcanic plains, and ancient mud-brick kasbahs. Stop at the village of Agdz and explore the magnificent Tamnougalt Kasbah, one of the best-preserved and most architecturally impressive kasbahs in Morocco, still inhabited by members of the same Glaoui family who have lived there for centuries. Your guide brings the history of this ancient Saharan trading hub to life. Continue south through the date palm groves and ancient ksour (fortified villages) of the lower Drâa, stopping at Tamegroute — home of the Nasiriyya Library, which houses one of the oldest manuscript collections in the Islamic world, with texts dating back to the 13th century, and the extraordinary green-glazed pottery workshops that have made Tamegroute ceramics famous throughout Morocco. The final stretch to Zagora passes through increasingly desert-like terrain before arriving at the famous sign reading "Timbuktu 52 Days" — a reminder that the ancient trans-Saharan trade routes began here. Overnight: Riad or Guesthouse in Zagora.

Day4

Zagora → Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) via Rissani

From Zagora, you continue east and north along the edge of the Sahara on one of Morocco's most dramatic back routes, passing through the ancient oasis of Mhamid el-Ghizlane — the last town before the Algerian border and the starting point of historic trans-Saharan caravans — and then heading northeast through the pre-Saharan steppe landscape. The road crosses the vast, flat Erg Chegaga basin — an area of small dune fields and desert plains that gives you a taste of the great ergs to come — before the route turns toward Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalet and birthplace of the Alaoui dynasty that has ruled Morocco since the 17th century and continues to do so today under King Mohammed VI. Explore the remarkable Ksar Oulad Abdelhalim, the largest and most elaborately decorated kasbah in the Tafilalet, built in the 19th century and now partially restored by the Getty Conservation Institute. Browse the legendary Rissani weekly market — a genuine Saharan souk where dates, spices, silver jewelry, and Berber rugs are traded alongside livestock and provisions. Then comes the moment you have been building toward: arriving at Merzouga and catching your first proper sight of the Erg Chebbi dunes, rising over 150 meters and stretching to the horizon, in the dramatic late afternoon light. Mount your camels at sunset for the unforgettable trek into the dunes and your Berber desert camp. Overnight: Desert Camp at Erg Chebbi.

Day5

Sahara Sunrise → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley

Your guide wakes you in the dark before dawn to climb the dunes and watch the Sahara sunrise — a moment of transcendent beauty and absolute silence that travelers consistently describe as the most powerful of their entire trip. Return to camp for a full Moroccan breakfast, then begin the western journey through some of Morocco's most spectacular canyon landscapes. The first major stop is the magnificent Todra Gorge near Tinerhir — 300-meter vertical walls of pink limestone narrowing to a slot just 10 meters wide at the gorge floor, where a cold clear stream runs through the shade. Walk through the gorge, photographing the extraordinary geology and watching local families who have lived within this canyon for generations. Continue west into the deeply beautiful Dades Valley, a long, winding valley of rose orchards, ancient kasbahs, and dramatic geology. Stop at the Dades Gorge viewpoint to photograph the famous "Monkey's Fingers" rock formations before continuing through the Valley of Roses at Kelâa M'Gouna. Visit a rose water cooperative (April–May: witness the rose harvest festival) and continue to a beautiful riad in the Dades Valley for the night. Overnight: Riad in Dades Valley or Boumalne Dadès.

Day6

Dades → Skoura Oasis → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Fes (partial)

Today is one of the great driving days of the tour, covering a spectacular sweep of Morocco's landscapes as you move from south to north. Departing the Dades Valley after breakfast, stop at the magnificent Skoura Oasis — a dense palmery concealing some of Morocco's most impressive kasbahs, including Kasbah Amridil, considered one of the country's most beautiful. The oasis is a cool, shaded paradise of date palms, olive and almond trees, and intricate traditional irrigation systems (khettaras) that have watered this land for centuries. Continue east to Erfoud, famous for its fossil-marble artisans, where you can visit a workshop to see how the remarkably well-preserved Devonian sea creatures (ammonites, orthoceras, trilobites) are cut and polished from black marble. Then head north through the extraordinary Ziz Gorge — a dramatic canyon drive alongside a miraculous date palm oasis that seems impossible in such an arid landscape — and continue through the Middle Atlas mountains to Midelt for lunch and a final mountain crossing before arriving in Fes by late evening. Overnight: Riad in Fes medina.

Full Day in Fes — Ancient Medina Exploration

A full day in Fes el-Bali — the world's largest car-free urban area and one of the best-preserved medieval cities on Earth. Your expert local guide begins the day at the Bou Inania Madrasa, a 14th-century Quranic school whose interior — a soaring composition of zellij tilework, stucco filigree, and carved cedar — is widely considered the finest example of Marinid architecture. Continue to the Chouara Tannery, visible from the balconies of the surrounding leather workshops, where hundreds of circular stone vats filled with natural dyes and pigeon dung (used as a softener) are worked by men who have learned the craft from their fathers and grandfathers. It is one of the most vivid and unforgettable visual experiences in the entire Arab world. Visit the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University — founded in 859 AD, it holds the title of the world's oldest continually operating university, predating Oxford by over 300 years. Walk through the Andalusian Quarter, founded by Muslim refugees from Cordoba and Sevilla in the 9th century. Explore the Foundouk el-Nejjarine (restored caravanserai) and the animated spice souk where mounds of cumin, turmeric, ras el hanout, and saffron create a visual and olfactory spectacle. The afternoon is free for independent exploration, shopping, or a private cooking class in a Fes riad kitchen. Overnight: Riad in Fes medina.

Fes Optional: Meknes Day Trip or Departure

Your final day in Morocco offers flexibility based on your preferences and flight schedule. If you are not departing until the evening, your guide can arrange a morning visit to Meknes — Morocco's other great imperial capital, just 60 km from Fes, and home to the magnificent Bab Mansour gate, considered the most beautiful gateway in North Africa; the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum, whose vast interior courts and tiled tomb chamber embody the grandeur of 17th-century Moroccan imperial architecture; and the Heri es-Souani granary complex — a monumental vaulted storage facility that could supply the imperial stables (which housed 12,000 horses) for years in case of siege. Alternatively, spend your final morning exploring more of the Fes medina on your own — perhaps visiting the Mellah (historic Jewish quarter) with its distinctive balconied houses, or the Royal Palace exterior with its extraordinary gilded brass doors. By midday, your driver will transfer you to Fes airport or train station for your onward journey. End of Tour.
