The Luxury Sahara Desert Camp experience is the crown jewel of our Morocco offerings — a curated two-day immersion into the magic of the Erg Chebbi sand sea that combines the raw, timeless beauty of the Sahara with genuine comfort, outstanding food, and deeply personal service. This is glamping at its most authentic and most beautiful, designed for travelers who want the extraordinary experience of sleeping in the desert without compromising on quality.
Unlike standard camp experiences, our luxury camp features private tent suites with real beds and quality linens, traditional hammam-style bathroom facilities, and lantern-lit pathways between tents. The dinner is not a simple tagine by the fire — it is a multi-course gourmet Berber feast crafted by our camp cook, featuring local seasonal vegetables, slow-cooked lamb, house-made couscous, pastilla, and traditional sweets, served at private candlelit tables in the dunes with views of the star-filled sky. Berber musicians play traditional gnawa rhythms as the evening deepens into the most profound silence you have ever experienced.
The highlight of the two days is the private sunset camel trek — your own camels and guide taking you deep into the dunes as the sky transforms into a display of color that has moved travelers for millennia. The following morning, you rise before dawn for the sunrise — a solitary, transcendent moment on top of a dune with nothing but sand, silence, and the slowly brightening sky. This experience is ideal for couples, honeymooners, anniversary celebrations, and anyone seeking a profoundly memorable and romantic desert escape.
Transport to and from Merzouga/Erg Chebbi can be arranged from Fes, Marrakech, or as part of any of our multi-day tours — contact us to bundle the perfect itinerary around your luxury camp stay.
Arrive in Merzouga by early afternoon (transport options available — see our 3-Day or 4-Day tours for included transport, or arrange private transfers). Check into your deluxe room at a premium riad near the dunes for a shower and rest before the desert adventure begins. In the late afternoon (timing adjusted seasonally for the best sunset light), your private camel guide meets you at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Your camels — well-cared-for, gentle animals who have made this journey hundreds of times — set off at a slow, mesmerizing rhythm into the golden sand sea. No other group accompanies you; this is your private desert, your private moment. The camel trek follows a carefully planned route along the ridge lines of the highest dunes, maximizing the views in all directions as the light changes from gold to deep amber to rose. The dune crests catch the last light brilliantly as the shadows pool in the valleys below. After approximately 60–75 minutes, you arrive at your luxury camp — a cluster of beautifully appointed canvas tent suites arranged in a private corner of the dunes, connected by lantern-lit sandy paths. After settling in and freshening up, mint tea and Moroccan pastries are served at your private dune-top table as the sky darkens and the first stars appear. The dinner that follows is extraordinary: an elaborate multi-course Berber feast featuring house-made bread baked in the sand, a fragrant harira soup, pastilla au pigeon (or vegetarian variant), a slow-cooked lamb tagine with preserved lemon and olives, and a classic Moroccan dessert of honey-drenched chebakia. After dinner, the camp musicians play hypnotic gnawa rhythms while you lie back on cushions and look up at one of the most magnificent skies you will ever see. The Milky Way is clearly visible; with zero light pollution, the Sahara night sky is an observatory-quality starscape. Your guide can point out constellations, planets, and if you're fortunate, a meteor shower. Retire to your luxury tent — comfortable beds, quality blankets (the desert can be surprisingly cold at night outside summer), and the absolute silence of the sand sea surrounding you. Overnight: Luxury Desert Camp, Erg Chebbi.
This morning begins in the dark — your camp host gently wakes you around 5:30–6:00 AM (adjusted seasonally) and guides you by lamplight to the foot of the highest dune near camp. Climbing barefoot in the cool pre-dawn air, following the ridge of the dune as the world below is still blue and silent, is itself a meditation. At the summit, you sit or stand as the horizon ahead — toward the Algerian border — begins to lighten. The sky shifts from deep indigo to violet to rose to a brilliant, burning orange-gold as the sun appears above the dunes, sending long, graphic shadows racing across the sand in all directions. The silence, the scale, and the extraordinary beauty of this moment is something that nearly every traveler describes as a life-changing experience. Descend back to camp for a delicious Moroccan breakfast: freshly baked msemen (flaky flatbread), honey and argan oil, Berber omelette, fresh orange juice, and pot after pot of sweet mint tea. After breakfast, optional activities include a short morning walk with your guide to observe the tiny tracks of desert wildlife (lizards, scarab beetles, and the elusive fennec fox all leave traces in the sand), or sandboarding down the dunes on wooden sleds (great fun for all ages). By mid-morning, your camels are ready to carry you back to the edge of the dunes — a beautiful morning trek in the cooler air, with entirely different light and colors than the previous evening. Check out from the camp, transfer back to Merzouga village, and continue to your next destination, or arrange a transfer back to Fes or Marrakech. End of service.
